Amarnath cave is a Hindu shrine located in Jammu and Kashmir state of India. The cave is situated at an altitude of 3,888 m (12,756 ft),about 141 km (88 mi) from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and reached through Pahalgam town. The shrine forms an important part of Hinduism and is considered to be one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. Snowy mountains covered this cave. The cave itself is covered with snow most of the year. For a short period of time in summer it is open for pilgrims. Thousands of Hindu and other devotees make an annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave across challenging mountainous terrain.

Inside the 40 m or 130 ft high cave, a stalagmite is formed. Due to the freezing of water drops that fall from the roof of the cave onto the floor of the cave and grow upward vertically. By Hindu that is considered as a shivlinga. As per ancient Hindu text in Mahabharata and Purana that lingam formed by frozen water represents Lord Shiva.
Yatra started when the iced stalagmite Shiva lingam reaches the apex of its waxing phase through the summer month. Pilgrims visit this holy shrine during July- August month. Coinciding hindu holy month Shravan occurs during thimese days from July to August.
Amarnath yatra is as well as important for local muslim of that area. Livelihood for many shia muslim, Bakarwal Gujjars are provided by this yatra. The yatra is a way of earning revenue by the state government by imposing tax on pilgrims.
