Annapurna is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Goddess of the Harvest’ and the area of and around the massif allows for both high altitude climbs as well as moderate elevation trekking through fertile valleys. Annapurna area is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalaya by the Kali Gandaki river. The mountain has glaciers on its western and northwestern slopes which drain into this gorge. The Annapurna massif is perhaps the most astonishing and unforgettable mountain range in the Himalayas. There are seven major peaks in the region, including Annapurna I, the tenth highest mountain in the world, and at the centre of the massif is the Annapurna Sanctuary, a beautiful glacial plateau ringed by mountains. The walking country in and around this mountain range is simply spectacular – it is no surprise that trekking in the Annapurna are amongst the most highly regarded walking holidays in the world.
